-- Reviews by the Famous and well Known
The twist and turns in Soaps are always very difficult to follow through due to so many characters in them. A quiz is a super way of going back over again the plots and sub plots. You may even get a different angle of the characters.

Arguably, the most famous and longest running soap started on radio 58 years ago. It is still listened to by a vast listening audience who wouldn’t miss an episode. In those days, many people believed that they could travel to Ambridge where the soap was set, and they would find Dan archer, the jovial landlord of The Bull and his wife Doris serving a variety of customers, many of who became household names, among them Walter Gabriel and Tom Forrest who characters were so superbly drawn that listeners believed that they were real people.
With the advent of television, broadcasters carried on with this popular genre of entertainment and so was born today’s biggest and most successful soap – ‘CORONATION STREET’ which started in December 1960 and is still as popular as ever, nearly half a century later. What is the secret of its enduring success? It’s all down to a brilliant team of producers, directors, writers and performers. For millions of viewers the actors became real people. We all knew an Ena Sharples, and Elsie Tanner and drank in a pub like The Rover’s Return presided over by Jack and Annie Walker. Viewers identified with the characters and situations. Much of the credit is due to its creator Tony Warren who spent many weeks walking round Salford cemeteries in order to get a feel for authentic names for his cast.
I was fortunate to be invited to join the original writing team in 1960 along with such writing luminaries as Harry Kershaw, John Finch, Adele Rose, Harry Driver and Jack Rosenthal. Together, we helped to launch the ‘soap to end all soaps’ of which, after the first episode was transmitted a television critic write ‘With its smoky chimneys and dull, grey characters, this will not last it’s two week run!’ As a budding writer, it gave a massive boost to my career and was instrumental in my future success.
I would heartily recommend ‘The Soap Quiz Book’ compiled by Mark Bennison, to all the many devotees of soap operas. Within it’s pages you will find hundreds of surprising facts and figures relating to every soap ever written. It’s a book no self respecting soap fan should be without.

I have been an actress for over thirty years, working in theatres in London and in the provinces as well as playing many roles on television. It is however, the characters I played in Soap Operas that people seem to remember more than anything else. I played 'Gloria Todd' in 'Coronation Street' for four years, I then moved onto 'Brookside' where I played the long suffering 'Jackie Corkhill' for eleven years and have recently appeared in ‘Emmerdale’ and ‘Doctors’.
Soap operas are some of the nations' favourite form of entertainment, attracting huge television audiences. Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Eastenders, Hollyoaks and the daytime favourite Doctors, to name but a few, we seem to have room for them all. However, as any soap fan will know, sometimes the storylines are more interesting than others and sometimes they seem rather far fetched with outrageous plots and extraordinary characters.
Soaps enter our houses like old familiar friends, no need for an introduction, they are expected and their daily arrival (gone are the days of just one or two episodes a week) is much anticipated. We laugh and cry with the characters, loathing some and loving others, yes, just like old friends!
The plots are the source of even further entertainment, long after the episodes have finished, as we discuss and debate the rights and wrongs, the will he, won't he? should she, shouldn't she?
Then there are the soap quizzes! I remember being on a TV quiz years ago and being questioned on 'Brookside' (assuming I would be a fountain of knowledge). How wrong they were ... I might have been in the show for eleven years but could hardly remember any actual events and names of characters were a distant memory!
I hope your memories of soap happenings are better than mine. I do remember one very important thing about the world of Soap, I met and worked with some wonderful and highly talented people and had the opportunity to play the gammet of emotions in some heartbreaking scenes. I enjoyed working as part of a team and the great sense of 'belonging'. For all this, and the regular income, I shall always be extremely grateful.
Good luck with this quiz book …

It’s a long time ago now that we started life in Albert Square. I won’t say how long because it might give one of the EastEnders answers away later in the quiz book! All I will say is that, as an actor, the three years I spent on the BBC soap were some of the most enjoyable of my career: great writing, a really good cast and a fantastic character to play, ‘Lofty’.
None of us knew then how successful EastEnders would be. But we got our answer pretty quickly. It seemed like no time at all before we were getting 20 million people at a time tuning in to find out what happened next. I even remember reading in one newspaper the comment that ‘the only unrealistic thing about Brookside (the groundbreaking Channel 4 soap) is that none of the characters are talking about what’s happening in EastEnders!’
Coronation Street, of course, has a long and distinguished history and is still going strong. Since the mid-80s, though, it’s had plenty of competition for the public’s affections. It sometimes seems as if everybody watches one soap or another, sometimes more than one. And they can keep up with what’s happening in the ones they don’t watch by talking to their friends who do.
There have been plenty of famous storylines and famous characters. And that’s why I hope ‘The Soap Quiz Book’ will be fun: a chance to test yourself, your family and friends and to find out just how well you remember what’s happened in Albert Square or the Rovers Return, in Emmerdale or Ramsey Street, over the years.
I expect there are some questions in here that I really ought to know the answers to but don’t! I’m sure there are a few ‘masterminds’ out there who’ll fancy their chances of getting every single one right. Either way, hope you’ll enjoy the quizzes as much as you’ve enjoyed watching the soaps that all the questions are based round.
Oh, and before I go, one last thing: thanks to Apex Publishing Ltd, the publishers of this book, for agreeing to pay a royalty on sales of the book to Children In Need.

COVERED IN SOAPY BUBBLES
TELLY lover I may be, massive soap follower I ain’t.
I struggle to watch five episodes of Corrie a week so how people fit EastEnders, Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Casualty on top of that I’ve no idea.
I do remember something of Emmerdale before they dropped the ‘farm’ bit and watched Brookside on and off during its Channel Four existence so I thought I’d test my ageing brain cells out on The Soap Quiz Book, penned by Mark Bennison with forewords by actors Tom ‘Lofty’ Watt and Sue Jenkins.
The 150-page hardback book is split into categories with ten questions.
These range from the programmes themselves to actors -Dannii and Kylie Minogue, Holly Valance and the late Heath Ledger are featured - pubs, locations and soap deaths.
With Christmas round the corner, an hour quizzing your relatives on their in-depth knowledge of Mike Baldwin and Seth Armstrong could prove more illuminating than endless repeats of Only Fools... and the Strictly special.
Published by Apex Publishing Ltd, The Soap Quiz Book retails for £9.99 and 50p from each copy goes to the BBC’s Children in Need appeal.

The Soap Quiz Book compiled by Mark Bennison
Hands up if you remember Minnie Caldwell and Albert Tatlock?
You might not win any prizes for knowing the answers but The Soap Quiz Book is positively bubbling with fun and entertainment.
Whether you want to revisit Coronation Street, drop in on Albert Square or simply stroll down memory lane, it has everything for our nation of soap lovers.
Millions of us are addicted to our weekly helping of TV soap; we just can’t get enough of the gripping storylines, the goodies, the baddies, the weddings, the romances and, of course, the dramatic deaths.
The Soap Quiz Book is simply awash with all your favourite characters and memorable moments, and you can test out your knowledge of their lives and times in 1,000 truly testing questions.
Bennison has packed the pages with fascinating facts and essential viewing episodes from veteran soaps like Coronation Street and EastEnders right through to relative newcomers Hollyoaks and Doctors.
As well as questions on the individual soaps, you can trawl through your memory bank to recall both on and off screen facts about the actors and actresses who played the heroes and the villains.
Who did Coronation Street barmaid Bet Lynch marry in 1987, which Spice Girl appeared in The Bill in 1993 and what was the name of Jason Donovan’s character in Neighbours?
If you are hooked on the endless romantic entanglements that feature so largely in soaps, you’ll probably want to select questions in the ‘Love Interests’ section or you can have a go at naming some famous ‘Spin-offs.’
There have also been notable ‘Guest Appearances’ over the years ... for instance, which Australian cricketer appeared twice in Neighbours in 2006 and which Lord of the Rings actor featured in Coronation Street?
And when all those pages of soap stories have slipped through your fingers, there is the added bonus of fun with words sections like sorting anagrams into the names of stars and matching characters to the correct soap.
So whether you’ve been watching Corrie since the 60s or never missed an episode of Neighbours, you’d better show a clean pair of heels and head for the bookshop before they run clean out!
