-- Reviews by the Famous and well Known
My first dealing with Jonny Hewston was in the Victoria Casino, Edgeware Road, London when I bought a ten per cent piece of him at a main event.
Jonny won it and I collected £3,000.
After that we became great friends.
This led me to ask him to play poker in the England team when I was given the job as Captain. It was my task to pick the team and it was a tough job to do. For every one you pick there are 20 others you can't. It's not a job you get thanked for.
I picked Jonny because of his tremendous record in the one table format.
He duly won the England game. He also won the support of me and all of his family - and I know he was very proud. This was also a great result for me.
And that moment proved that I had made a good choice.
Jon strikes me as a loveable rogue, a type of guy not unlike Del Boy of TV's Only Fools and Horses.
Like Del, Jon's heart is in the right place.
I wish him success with the book - which is a damn good read.

I've never been much of a gambler. My first and only flutter on the horses was when, as a teenager, I got my pal's dad to put a bet on the Grand National for me. My horse came in second, and I made 50p. Since then I have purchased the odd scratch card, but that's about it.
Being pretty much a non-gambler, its hard for me to understand the allure of what is, essentially, a very risky pass time. Then I read the story of Jonny's life, and things changed. I still don't gamble, but at least I now know what inspires other people who do.
I get the impression that Jonny could have made a success of many things. It just happened to be poker, a game which I haven't a clue how to play. Jonny does, and he certainly knows how to make money from it.
In this intriguing account, Jonny Texas and Janet Lee detail the former's roller-coaster ride through a multitude of experiences at the card table and how his obsession impacted upon his life. Jonny doesn't encourage people to follow in his footsteps, but his account lays bare the seductive allure of poker.
Ironically, its Jonny's life as a youngster that probably gifted him with the tenacity to be good at his chosen sport. The book contains a moving account of how he met family members - half-brothers and sisters - he never knew and how he was forced to come to terms with the situation. His resilience was to lend itself to the poker tables and, as the book details, the rest is history.
From Sixpences to Dollars is a unique account of a poker player's life, and just begs to be read from cover to cover in one sitting. Absolutely fascinating.

I found this book very funny in places as it takes the reader through the ups and downs of living a gambling life. There are also some sad parts to Jonny’s story, he had a tough upbringing but he has come through the lows and seems to be very confident in what he does. The book is hilarious in places and a very good read.
