THE HORROR FILM QUIZ BOOK

I remember when, back in the early 1970s, Tyne Tees Television used to have a regular weekly slot in their schedule devoted to horror films. At 10 pm, Fear on Friday would attract untold numbers of teenagers like myself who desired nothing more than to be frightened witless by Pete Cushing, Christopher Lee and that master of the horror genre Vincent Price.
Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, werewolves…oh, those were the days. Nothing, in fact, whets my nostalgia than old horror films.
Truth to tell, I wasn't one for regularly visiting the cinema. If I was going to be scared silly then I'd much rather do it in the comfort of my own home. However, I did make an exception for the movie Jaws, and remember quite literally falling off my seat at the Jarrow Empire when the beast first launched itself out of the water towards Roy Scheider.
Given my penchant for reminiscing about horror movies, then, I was delighted to hear that writer and publisher Chris Cowlin has, in conjunction with fellow author Mark Goddard, written an intriguing tome entitled The Horror Film Quiz Book.
The book wallows unashamedly in nostalgia for all those great old films we knew and used to be frightened of, but also has sections dealing with modern scary movies too. "We've tried to cover all generations", said Mark Goddard, "We'd like to think there's something in there for everyone".
Marc, a horror film buff and proud of it, confesses to having in excess of five hundred horror movies on DVD. His favourite author is Jack Ketchum and his favourite director is Wes Craven – no surprises there, then.
Chris Cowlin is also an addict when it comes to the scarier aspects of cinematography: "I've always been interested in watching horror films, I can remember the first two being Jaws and Psycho, which I really enjoyed. These are films you can watch over and over again."
Chris is a prolific author, and I wondered where The Horror Film Quiz Book Rated in relation to the others he's penned.
"I've written over 40 books and this was definitely one of the most enjoyable…reliving the scary moments of so many great films. The questions in the book cover over 50 years of great film making and some great characters including Norman Bates, The Jigssaw and Freddy Krueger."
Call me psychic if you like, but somehow I don't think the book will be finding its way into our primary school libraries any time soon! Still, for aficionados of scary films it’s a must-have.
With over 1,000 questions relating to horror movies of all types, one could be forgiven for thinking that the book might become repetitive, but it doesn't. Georgia Jaggs, Marketing and Sales Assistant for the publishers of the book, told me, "With sections on all the best-loved spine tingling films from yesteryear through to the current day, this book is a must for all fans of the genre - but be prepared for one or two surprises as, in the world of horror, things are not always as they seem".
My favourite horror movie of all time? That's a tough one, but I reckon I'd have to plump for Roger Corman's Bucket of Blood along with the original House on Haunted Hill starring Vincent price. I might be old-fashioned, but they don't make horror movies like they used to…
The Horror Film Quiz Book is published by Apex Publishing on October 31, price £9.99 (ISBN:
978-1-906358-71-6 / 1-906358-71-0).

THE HORROR QUIZ BOOK
Compiled by Chris Cowlin and Mark Goddard
Sometimes a book comes along that is so addictively 'horrible' that you just can't put it down...
Whether your passion is for maniacs and monsters or ghouls and ghosts, The Horror Film Quiz Book is the perfect companion for a dark and stormy night!
Co-author Mark Goddard admits he can't get too much of a bad thing so was in his element helping Chris Cowlin dig through the graveyard of scary films to unearth 1,000 questions that will set your pulse racing.
Horror is still one of the most popular genres in the history of film, producing hundreds of classic titles from Creature from the Black Lagoon, Psycho and The Exorcist right through to Saw, Final Destination and The Ring.
Cinemagoers have always loved sitting on the edge of their seats and letting the fear factor take them over as they feast their eyes on the latest bloodthirsty blockbuster.
And the questions assembled here will certainly test the knowledge of both aficionados and newcomers – some are 'dead' easy while others offer only a ghost of a chance to get them right!
Cowlin and Goddard aim to test your memory of the writers, the actors, the characters – whether from our universe or a parallel one – who all have a role to play in the wonderful world of horror.
As well as hundreds of questions on individual films like Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Pan's Labyrinth and The Evil Dead, there are sections on animals in horror, sequels, directors, legendary actors, release dates and adaptations.
Do you know the name of the classic fiend featured in Friday the 13th, what number house on Ocean Avenue did the family move into in The Amityville Horror and what are the names of the three US backpackers in the film Hostel?
And what about all those intriguing items of trivia ... did Tippi Hendren actually have her face cut by a bird during the filming of Hitchcock's classic film The Birds and was red jam used as blood for Bram Stoker's Dracula?
With the bonus of a few unexpected twists and turns, this is a must-have book for the library of all horror film fans and a 'to-die-for' addition to the party games store cupboard...

TRICK OR TREAT?
One of the many books being published for Halloween is The Horror Film Quiz Book. The questions are organised by film, though it might have been as well to categorise them according to difficulty. They range from the absurdly easy – ‘who directed the original Psycho?’ or ‘For his main female lead roles Hitchcock chose girls with what hair colour?’ – to the utterly impossible for anyone except the most committed horror nerd: ‘What type of chainsaw was used in Texas Chainsaw Massacre?’ Winter evening fun for all the family.

WHOLE LOTTA HORROR
HOW many cabins are there in the Bates motel?
What’s Carrie’s surname?
Where was Cronenberg born?
If you can you know someone who can answer one or even three of these questions, then you may have found them the right Christmas present.
I was asked if I’d like to review the Horror Film Quiz Book and thought I’d be quite good, given that several of my close friends love horror hence lots of cinema visits.
It’s pretty solid however unless you spend lots and lots of time watching a whole lot of horror films from classics starring Vincent Price through to 28 Days Later.
Don’t panic though you can always just skip a page as I did as each one is dedicated to a film/actor/director of your choice – mine included Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later and the Eli Roth section.
Perhaps I’ll try and get through 1,000 over the weekend.

THE HORROR FILM QUIZ BOOK: 1,000 QUESTIONS ON SPINE CHILLING FILMS.
By Chris Cowlin and Mark Goddard.
CHRISTMAS is the perfect time for a spooky movie but with so many on the shelves at HMV which fright flick is guarantee to send a shiver down your spine?
The Horror Film Quiz Book is packed full of fascinating fright film facts and brain teasers on some of the great spookfests of the past 100 years.
Even if you love horror pictures and consider yourself a bit of an expert, I give you a ghoulish guarantee that you'll still find something new between the covers.
Authors Chris Cowlin and Mark Goddard have mined a rich jugular vein of horror history from the Universal classics of the Thirties to the Hammer horrors of the Sixties through the zombie-thons of the Seventies and the post-modern reinventions of the Scream generation.
It's great fun for trivia buffs and the perfect way to end those arguments about Freddie, Jason, Michael etc.

THE HORROR FILM QUIZ BOOK
AT CHRISTMAS there’s always one or two people who flumux even the most inspired shoppers.
Obviously trying not to stereotype anyone, but these people may often be male, spend a lot of time watching late night television and have an interest in the obscure.
Sound familiar? If so, “The Horror Film Quiz Book” compiled by Chris Cowlin and Mark Goddard may just be the perfect present for anyone with a morbid fascination with the occult; an attraction to the darker side of cinema or maybe just a love of quizzes.
With 1,000 questions on spine chilling films from The Shining to Ring even the most ardent horror film fan will have their knowledge tested.
Do you know the name of the top-secret genetic research facility in Resident Evil? Or the tag line for Dog Soldiers? If you’re a die hard horror film buff you should; or maybe you know someone who is.
There may be a number among us who don’t embrace the Christmas spirit as many do; people who would rather dwell in the land of zombies, vampires and deranged mass murderers on the rampage and why not. If you have a member of your family who doesn’t find the joy in yuletide; who doesn’t want to play charades after a sherry or even settle down to watch The Sound of Music again they might appreciate answering questions on The Night of the Living Dead instead.
Each to their own but I know which one my son would prefer.

THE HORROR FILM QUIZ BOOK: 1000 QUESTIONS ON SPINE CHILLING FILMS
By Chris Cowlin & Mark Goddard
Published by Apex Publishing Ltd, 2009. 150 pages.
Being a lover of horror trivia, this book is made for people like me. Covering quite a few different films, from the classics like PSYCHO to more modern day films like 28 DAYS LATER, but sticking to the more well known titles. So even the newer horror fan is going to know these movies, or at least has heard of them. But coming up with trivia questions is no simple task. It's very easy to compile some questions that any 3rd grader could answer, or working hard at coming up with questions that even the filmmaker themselves wouldn't be able to answer. So coming up with a mixture somewhere in between is no easy task. But Cowlin and Goddard have done a pretty good job at doing just that.
As I read through the book, there were several questions that were extremely easy. But as you read, there is usually going to be at least one question to give even the seasoned horror fan a puzzled look. And that is the beauty of this book. It's a lot of fun to page through by yourself, or it a great tool for a Halloween party trivia game. If you're looking to increase your trivia knowledge, this book is for you, not to mention it coming in very handy for parties.
