Brief Description: Churches have carried with them vital links to the history of Great Britain throughout the ages, from the few early Roman Christian churches, the arrival of St Augustine in AD 597 and up until the present day.
In the nineteenth century, new churches were being built, some of which were funded entirely by one benefactor. One such church is the Church of St Peter and St Paul at Birch in Essex. Replacing an earlier church, it was the gift of Charles Gray Round of Birch Hall and, with its elegant spire, soon became a distinctive and treasured local landmark.
Now redundant, the church’s structure is crumbling and, without much needed repair work, this magnificent building may be lost altogether. This book is a compilation of information from a wide range of sources relating to the church, documenting its history, consecration, rectors and patrons, memorials, architectural features and interior decoration and furnishings. Thus, even if the church building itself dies, its history will live on for posterity in this permanent historical and photographic record.
