-- Reviews by the Famous and well Known
What a lovely, well thought out story. I couldn't put the book down. It felt very real, maybe places like this exist? Well written, a lot of thoughts and characters have been moulded into a wonderful story. It’s left me wondering if it really existed; if it does nobody would ever believe you. More of the same Rachel, it’s certainly a book worth reading.

The clever thing about this story is that the reader becomes as confused as the character caught up in the strange goings on in Tunnelton. I had to keep reading because I wanted to return to the real world but there was still a desire to discover what was really going on there. Was it a dream? Was it real? You can only find out by reading the whole story. The fact that you want to get to the end of the book is the key. This is a fine effort from a young writer and I look forward to future works by her.

WOMAN'S WORLD
RACHEL'S DEBUT NOVEL IS A HIT!
READ ALL ABOUT IT! The debut novel by Linthwaite author Rachel Donkersley (pictured above left) has hit bookshelves across the district.
The Umbrella Graveyard - an imaginative story about a hero explorer - was officially launced locally with a Saturday morning book signing session at M Roberts, Britannia Road, Slaithwaite.
Rachel (26) works for West Yorkshire Police as a member of the civilian support staff but admits her ultimate goal is to write full time.
Her hero Paddy encounters an unprecedented string of events when he stumbles upon Tunnelton, a town existing in a parallel universe.
Several local bookshops have taken copies to sell. As well as M Roberts, outlets include Toll House Bookshop in Holmfirth and several others in Huddersfield.

When I first saw my review copy of Umbrella Graveyard I thought it was a children’s book, but something about the artwork drew me, made me focus – a bit like an itch you cannot scratch. A row of detached houses drawn in pastel colours, cartoon-style. Innocent, but the more you look the more their transparent nature becomes evident. The ordinary is hiding something extraordinary.
Umbrella Graveyard is about a young architect who finds himself catapulted into a strange, parallel universe called Tunnelton. For the next seven days Tunnelton is the home of Paddy Jones – Tunnelton and the many strange characters who live within its twilight boundaries.
As Jones struggles to come to terms with his bizarre translocation he asks himself questions; some trivial, others profound. Umbrella Graveyard is The Prisoner revisited, but with a few good twists.
Donkersley is a very young writer but a gifted one. This, her first novel, is very promising indeed. Somehow I can feel a sequel coming on…

ADVENTURE TIME FOR NEW WRITER
RACHEL Donkersley certainly has a lively imagination.
And it's one which becomes evident when she puts pen to paper.
Her first book, The Umbrella Graveyard, is due on bookshop shelves from February 1.
And you can see the happiness on her face.
"It's really exciting," she said.
The 26-year-old has been writing for years and is delighted that her first book is about to be published.
The Umbrella Graveyard is an imaginative story with a hero, explorer Paddy Jones.
Paddy has just spent Christmas with family in Hepby and is on his way back home to York.
On the way, he encounters an unprecedented string of events.
He stumbles on Tunnelton, a town existing in a parallel universe.
A collection of colourful chapters of magic follow as he continues to learn more about the town.
Rachel's idea for the book has been with her since the beginning of her university course.
"I'm interested in exploring the imagination, to see how far it will let you go.
"I visualise the story in my mind as I write. I like to push the imagination."
Rachel was born in Lindley, but moved to Leeds to study multimedia technology at university. She lived in the city for six years.
Now she is back in Huddersfield with a new place of her own and her family around her.
She works full time for West Yorkshire Police and has written the book in her spare time.
"My goal would be to be able to write full time," she said.
The book will be available through local bookshops and also through the amazon website.

RACHEL'S FIRST BOOK
Writer brings novel Paddy to book.
A VALLEY WRITER is about to realise a cherished ambition.
The Umbrella Graveyard - an imaginative story about a hero explorer - will be hitting local bookshops next Tuesday (February 1).
And Rachel will be signing copies at M Roberts, Britannia Road, Slaithwaite tomorrow week (Saturday February 5), from 9am.
The 26-year-old studied multimedia technology at Leeds university. It was during her six years living in the city that she first had the idea for the story.
Lindley born Rachel, now lives in Linthwaite and works full time for West Yorkshire Police.
But she says: her goal is to be able to write full time. "I'm interested in exploring the imagination, to see how far it will let you go. I visualise the story in my mind as I write. I like to push the imagination."

Rachel has visited local bookshops asking them to stock the book (front cover, seen right).
Most had been "very supportive." she added.

-- Readers Comments
This book would make a good read for a student book club, a good debate is promised! It’s like a jigsaw puzzle; you have to read it to the very end to see where all the pieces go. Each chapter has a deep meaning and certainly gives you something to think about! I could describe each chapter but I wont, it’s like a parable is all I’ll say. It was a really good read, well worth it!

When I first started to read this book I felt Paddy having visited his home town and heading back to his own place saw lights which one takes to be UFO’s, but when you read on, you feel he’s in a dream of what a perfect world would be like, where everyone gets on with everyone. No disagreements and no lost tempers.

The moment you start to read this book you know it will be a very unusual read. You go on a journey with Paddy Jones and have the most incredible adventure. Each chapter brings along something unexpected and exciting. This book takes you into a magical world and it is a fantastic read.

I thought this was a good idea for a story. The story flowed well for a first novel. Rachel has written well and the story did keep me interested see how Paddy progressed through this world. Many of the ideas in the story were interesting. What a wonderful place this world would be if it was like Tunnelton.

This was Rachel’s first book and overall a good read, I liked it. It kept you guessing right up to the end. It is a story of a man on his way home, who becomes entangled in another world. Is he dreaming or not? You decide.
